How to install 7ways navigation program - complete tutorial:

  1. Download and extract 7ways package:
    Code:
    cd /opt/carpc
    wget http://navikey.ru/files/7w/7ways-linux-arm.tar.gz
    tar -xzvf 7ways-linux-arm.tar.gz

  2. Edit StartCarPC file, to run 7ways at startup:
    Code:
    cd /opt/carpc/startup
    sudo nano StartCarPC

    Replace:
    Code:
    # Start gpsd FOR NAVIT
    sudo killall gpsd
    gpsd /dev/ttyAMA0
    sudo stty -F /dev/ttyAMA0 38400&
    sudo gpsd /dev/ttyAMA0 -F /var/run/gpsd.sock&
    # Start Navit with a low priority
    cd /home/pi/navit_src/build/navit/
    sudo killall navit
    cd /opt/carpc/navit/navit/
    ./navit &

    With:
    Code:
    # Start gpsd FOR 7WAYS
    sudo killall gpsd
    gpsd /dev/ttyAMA0
    sudo stty -F /dev/ttyAMA0 38400&
    gpsctl -f -n /dev/ttyAMA0&
    sudo killall 7ways
    # Start 7ways with a low priority
    cd /opt/carpc/7ways/
    ./7ways &

  3. Edit GPS port and baud rate settings:
    Code:
    cd /opt/carpc/7ways/settings/
    sudo nano settings.xml

    Change:
    <gps port="/dev/ttyAMA0" baudRate="9600" useGPS="1" bgLocationMode="on" adjustSystemTime="1"/>

    Inside of settings.xml
    Code:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <settings build="845">
      <gps port="/dev/ttyAMA0" baudRate="9600" useGPS="1" bgLocationMode="on" adjustSystemTime="1"/>
      <interface useSystemKeyboard="1" language="english" layouts="english" activeLayout="english" m$

        </scale>

        <secondTurn show="1" metresBeforeFirst="1000" metresAfterFirst="1000"/>
        <lanes show="1" distance="500"/>
      </navigation>
      <search placeDistance1="150" placeDistance2="1000" placeDistance3="5000" infoListRadius="5" in$
      <speedcam angle="10" minTime="5" changeTime="2" showOnMap="1" mapMaxScale="200"/>
      <trackIndicators>
        <indicator id="DistanceTotalIndicator" controlId="indicator1"/>
        <indicator id="DistanceTrafficIndicator1" controlId="indicator2"/>

        <indicator id="TimeMovingIndicator1" controlId="indicator4"/>
        <indicator id="TimeStopIndicator1" controlId="indicator5"/>
        <indicator id="TimeTrafficIndicator1" controlId="indicator6"/>
        <indicator id="MaxSpeedIndicator1" controlId="indicator7"/>
        <indicator id="AvgSpeedIndicator1" controlId="indicator8"/>
      </trackIndicators>
      <log on="0" route="0" render="0" gps="0"/>
      <skin guiDay="nitro" guiNight="nitro" mapDay="nitro" mapNight="nitro" dayNightMode="auto"/>
      <userData fileFormat="gpx" useCellular="0" contentPath="/home/pi/mape/"/>
      <system mapCacheSize="0" picturesCacheSize="0"/>
      <statistics server="" sendInterval="60"/>
    </settings>

  4. To free up some space you can delete /opt/carpc/navit folder:
    Code:
    rm -rf /opt/carpc/navit

  5. Reboot.
    Code:
    sudo reboot

  6. If you have a problem with 7ways not running in full screen, I found out this red-neck solution:
    I modified file /home/pi/.config/lxsession/LXDE-pi/desktop.conf
    Code:
    sudo nano /home/pi/.config/lxsession/LXDE-pi/desktop.conf

    I replaced
    Code:
    [Session]
    window_manager=openbox-lxde-pi

    with:
    Code:
    [Session]
    window_manager=

    File desktop.conf:
    Code:
    [Session]
    window_manager=

    [GTK]
    sNet/ThemeName=PiX
    sNet/IconThemeName=gnome
    sGtk/FontName=Roboto Light 12
    iGtk/ToolbarStyle=3
    iGtk/ButtonImages=0
    iGtk/MenuImages=1
    iGtk/CursorThemeSize=18
    iXft/Antialias=1
    iGtk/AutoMnemonics=1
    iGtk/EnableMnemonics=1
    sGtk/ColorScheme=selected_bg_color:#8686ababd9d9\nselected_fg_color:#ffffffffffff\nbar_bg_color:#ededececebeb\nbar_fg_color:#000000000000\n
    sGtk/CursorThemeName=Adwaita
    iGtk/ToolbarIconSize=3
    iNet/EnableEventSounds=1
    iNet/EnableInputFeedbackSounds=1
    iXft/Hinting=1
    sXft/HintStyle=hintfull

    [Mouse]
    AccFactor=20
    AccThreshold=10
    LeftHanded=0

    [Keyboard]
    Delay=500
    Interval=30
    Beep=1

    And then I exited KODI, and set up the task-bar to auto hide.

And now you should have a working 7ways GPS navigation program! ;)

I will attempt today, but am I going to use the same device name. I am using a USB globalsat 353s4.

Should I replace the code to reflect the USB device; replaceing AMA0 with USB0

# Start gpsd FOR 7WAYS
sudo killall gpsd
gpsd /dev/ttyUSB0
sudo stty -F /dev/ttyUSB0 38400&
gpsctl -f -n /dev/ttyUSB&
sudo killall 7ways
# Start 7ways with a low priority
cd /opt/carpc/7ways/
./7ways &

Or should the code be working as you suggest for both USB and AMA devices. . .

Yes, If you have a USB device, then you must specify USB device path and also in 7ways port!

thank you so much for the tutorial.. with your assistance , i have gotten the 7ways to work.

Now on to the next issue. . . It seems that the 7ways does not connect everytime the Pi starts. Sometimes, i have to restart about 3 to 4 times to get it working. . .

On top of that, I am not able to find streets that are identified on the map. Only main streets appear when doing an address search. Can anyone provide a solution to these issues. Although 7ways looks better, i am getting about the same functionality out of it as I am with Navit. In Navit, neither am I able to find exact addresses.

Once again, thanks for all your help, hints, tips, and assistance.

Well, I found out that GPS does not connect automatically, you have to go into GPS settings and click Detect after every reboot. I dont know how to fix that.

And the second problem is the maps. 7ways uses OpenStreetMap, the same maps are used by Navit and this maps are not the best...

I think 7ways is the best GPS program for Linux so far. Maybe you can have Wine and iGO software, but that uses alot more CPU and RAM...
